Non Network Secure EV Charging

| Uncategorized | March 4, 2012

Liberty PlugIns has developed a secure access technology for electric vehicle charging stations that does not require networks or proprietary billing systems. Liberty’s “Synchronous Codes” system enables charging station owners to create and issue charge authorization codes to control access to the charger and prevent unauthorized use. These codes can be issued for a single charge or for a whole year and the system does not require any physical or wireless communications with the charger itself.

Liberty has worked closely with leading parking access and revenue control (PARC) vendors to integrate Synchronous Codes with their payment kiosks, thereby allowing parking lot owners and operators to add EV charging stations to their existing revenue collection systems. This will facilitate the growth of EV charging infrastructure by incentivizing these owners to install chargers now and control their revenues without having to interface with a proprietary third party billing system.

In addition, these charge authorization codes are perfect to send over cell phones, and Liberty recently introduced Pay-by-Phone Charging services with mobile payment providers MobileNow, Parkmobile, and Verrus’ PayByPhone. Cities and lot owners will be able to start generating EV charging revenues with nothing more than a “Liberty Enabled” EV charger and a place to install it. Parking and EV charging payment can be made using any cell phone, iPad or similar mobile computer device. “Pay By Phone” is popular with younger and tech savvy consumers, and is going to be a real game changer” said Forest Williams VP Sales and Marketing at Liberty PlugIns.

Synchronous Codes: It’s all about timing!

Charging authorization codes are generated using a time-based predictive algorithm that runs locally on parking payment kiosks or on remote servers in the case of Pay-by-Phone services. A receiver card is installed in the charger along with a keypad for authorization code entry. The pay station or mobile payment server generates an authorization code using a common clock signal (i.e. synchronous) with the receiver cards on the charger. The code is recognized as invalid, the charger is unlocked and the charging period is set

Here are some of the significant features of the Synchronous Codes access control system:

  • No Networking: Synchronous Codes uses UTC clock signals and requires no physical or wireless network connection whatsoever.
  • Choice in Hardware: Ecotality and Coulomb have very limited hardware choices. In contrast, LPI’s Synchronous Codes is available as an option on ClipperCreek, Eaton, Schneider, Siemens, G.E., PEP, and Control Modules Inc.
  • Access Control (no billing): Owners can generate and issue codes to key staff or guests with any valid period from 20 minutes to 1 year or longer that can be used at any unoccupied charger. LPI can also work in conjunction with HID and other RFiD security card systems.
  • Choice in Billing Systems: Ecotality’s Blink and Coulomb’s ChargePoint networks are proprietary billing systems. Synchronous Codes can be integrated into the city’s existing parking access and revenue control (PARC) system, thus permitting the collection of EV charging fees on the existing pay stations and accounting software.

I like the whole idea of an open source charge EV system, less costly and easy to use. More particularly I think everyone is going to be happy not to have to sign cumbersome yearly contracts or monthly subscriptions. With the Liberty Plugins solution there are no billing fees or subscriptions, unlike both Blink and ChargePoint which assess monthly access fees and per-transaction fees. There are no such fees for Synchronous Codes beyond a modest Code Security Maintenance fee.

Electric Vehicle EV: The Second Coming

| Uncategorized | February 27, 2012

Back in 2007, the Democratic underground and Plenty magazine online, had animated discussion board and blog postings on the second coming of the electric car. Then, the EV was referred to as the “zombie of transportation”. They portrayed GM and the “famously-killed EV1”, a limited interest in EV by the likes of Ed Begley and his Fan club. I remember also the the death of Phoenix Motorcar venture with Altairnano and UQM, the fake headway by Zap and other befallen unsung heroes of the premature EV-Revolution. Buy the Book.

But here we are at the end of 2010 and EV2, so to speak, as the Volt is nothing but a disguised Hybrid still dependent on foreign oil. Dare we say GM did it again. If it were not for the Nissan Leaf , the Wheego and Think city we could still be talking about “voodoo electric”. The Coda sedan, The Mitsubishi iMIEV, the BYD E6, The RAV4 electric by Toyota and Tesla alliance, The Tesla S model, Tata Vista and NanoEV, Honda Fit, Zap EV taxi, Renault Z.E, and I can go on and on…. The list of new and established manufacturers getting into the game by 2012 is mind bogging, considering that back in 2007 they were pigeon holing EV as bonified golf cart, on steroids.

Now it’s a different story and real full size EVs capable of 0-60 miles/hr in just 4 seconds became an accepted fact as demonstrated by Tesla Roadster and Lightning GT electric performances among other High performance Luxury sports electric cars. A whole web site, LuxuryEV.com, is dedicated to such celebrity and High End segment of the nascent EV market. The book “Electric Vehicle- EV: The Second Coming”, by the same owner gets the word out to the masses that it is no longer a matter of “Who killed thee EV” but rather of “Revenge of the EV”. The documentary put the nail in the coffins of the EV detractors and skeptics, once and for all.

Dare I say that we have reached a stage of irreversibility, backed by a Progressive president and body of government, putting their “smart grid” and the “EV act” together, for the first time in the history of this country, in a serious effort to go green as a nation. No wonder the Big Automakers are jumping into the game, now that economic certainty and the public’s greener mindset became a non variable part of the equation.
Electric Vehicle-EV second coming is at hand. Those who were dreaming are awaken and the dead EV ventures are alive, again. Salvation from global warming, air pollution and dependence on oil, is coming, the second time around.
Let’s go green, let’s go electric,

Your EvPal

Hello Electric Vehicle EV world!

Welcome to Electric Vehicle EV Classifieds & News!

By 2015 the average EV will go at least 200 miles and cost under 25K. Many HEV will be replaced with newer more technologically advanced Electric Vehicles. Here is what the Official is saying about Battery Cost, the driver behing the high price tag of today’s EV.

“Secretary Chu said that we were on track to see the cost of a battery for a plug-in hybrid EV with a 40-mile range drop to $3,600 by 2015 compared to $12,000 in 2008. By 2020, he said we would see that cost drop to $1,500, an 87.5 percent drop from 2008 prices.” from ChargeEV.com site.

So it is not surprising to expect many EV and HEV owners will be dumping their old short range electric vehicle for more extended range EVs.
The market for Pre-Owned EV will grow exponentially as EV becomes mainstream. Don’t take my word for it…Secretary Chu said it better.
